Essential Prompts for Building Secure Supabase Backends with AI

Supabase is an incredible tool for building backends quickly. However, when you ask AI to write your database logic, it usually writes the easiest code, not the most secure code. If you are not careful, anyone could access or delete your user data.

Here are the essential prompts you must use to ensure your AI-generated Supabase backend is rock-solid and secure.

1. Always Ask for Row Level Security (RLS)

The most important feature in Supabase is Row Level Security (RLS). This ensures that User A cannot read or delete the data of User B. AI often forgets to include this.

The Prompt: "Write the SQL to create a `notes` table in Supabase. You MUST enable Row Level Security (RLS) on this table. Provide the exact RLS policies to ensure that authenticated users can only SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE their own notes."

2. Securing Server-Side Next.js Code

When you fetch data from Supabase in a Next.js API route or Server Component, you must handle the authentication tokens correctly.

The Prompt: "Write a Next.js App Router Server Component that fetches data from Supabase. Ensure you are securely creating the Supabase client using `@supabase/ssr` and passing the user cookies correctly so that RLS policies are enforced."

3. Preventing SQL Injection

Even though Supabase's JavaScript library protects against SQL injection automatically, it is good to be safe when writing custom RPC functions or complex queries.

The Prompt: "Review this Supabase query. Is there any risk of SQL injection or security vulnerabilities? Please sanitize all user inputs before passing them to the database."

4. Environment Variables Safety

Never accidentally expose your secret keys. The AI needs to know you want to use safe environment variables.

The Prompt: "Show me how to initialize the Supabase client in React. Please strictly use environment variables (`NEXT_PUBLIC_SUPABASE_URL` and `NEXT_PUBLIC_SUPABASE_ANON_KEY`) and never hardcode the keys in the file."

Summary

AI is a great tool for writing backends, but you must be the security guard. By explicitly mentioning "RLS," "environment variables," and "security" in your prompts, the AI will switch to "secure mode" and write production-ready code that keeps your data safe.
